What is PastryBase?
PastryBase is a woman-owned small business located in Richmond, VA, founded by Pastry Chef Jill Donaldson. We create all-natural, vegan and GF Baking Mixes & Baking Kits which contain our mixes, unique pastry tools, and natural decorations such as sprinkles dyed with vegetable colorants and organic fondant; essentially, everything you need to bake a fun seasonal dessert in a box!
Do you have a storefront?
PastryBase does not have a storefront open to the public at this time, but our products are for sale at a growing number of retail stores, and available here on our website for nationwide shipping!
What are our core beliefs?
PastryBase is passionate about changing the notion that baking is too difficult, arduous, and time-consuming for the home cook. We love to see families and friends together in the kitchen, creating fun memories! To do our part in encouraging both beginners and pastry mavens to get baking more often, we strive to provide baking mixes made with extremely high-quality ingredients that may be difficult for the home-baker to source, and to pair these mixes with tools, decorations, and tutorials to take the worry out of baking! The quality of our ingredients is our other passion...see below!
What are our ingredients?
We take pride in the quality of our ingredients and in keeping everything pure and all-natural. We use ingredients such as organic sugar, non-GMO aluminum-free baking powder, and real dried vanilla beans, just to name a few. We do not use 100% organic ingredients at this time, because we love some of our small local suppliers whose product is of the highest quality and remains all-natural & non-GMO, though not officially certified as USDA Organic (which can be a difficult endeavor.) We will support small local business whenever possible. Full ingredient lists can be found in product descriptions.
Do you have vegan options?
Yes!! All of our Baking Mixes are vegan! We always include vegan and non-vegan preparation instructions with our products; usually this boils down to choosing to add butter vs. vegetable oil and milk vs. non-dairy milk.
Do you have gluten-free options?
Yes! Our entire line of LillyBean by PastryBase Baking Mixes & Kits is Gluten-Free as well as vegan!
Are PastryBase Baking Boxes suitable for children?
Yes!! We include a special "Kids' Corner" project in each Baking Box, especially for little hands but always fun for all ages! The main dessert mix in each kit is also suitable for teaching baking fundamentals and professional decoration and plating techniques for all ages and skill levels.
Do I have to subscribe?
Our Baking Boxes are available in a 3-Month and 6-Month Subscription, and by subscribing, you'll be able to take advantage of the greatest savings PastryBase has to offer! However, all of our Baking Boxes, as well as our smaller Gift Box Kits, Accessories, and individual Baking Mixes are available for you to purchase "a la carte" as single purchases.
Can I change, cancel, or pause my subscription?
Yes! You can choose to change, cancel, or pause any time. The best part is that you can also manage your subscription from our website, and even pick a new shipping destination for your box every month if you choose! For instance, send May's box to Mom for Mother's Day, and then change the shipping address so next month's box goes to your best friend for her birthday in June! You can also buy a subscription as a gift, and it will be sent to the recipient each month.
What do I need to provide to bake with PastryBase Mixes?
We include instructions inside all of our kits for vegan and non-vegan preparation, and the ingredients you will need to provide are also listed at the bottom of each particular product page when you're shopping on our website. Usually, it's as simple as providing butter, eggs, and your choice of milk. For vegan preparation, it's usually oil, vegan butter, and non-dairy milk. Certain kits require slightly different items, such as the cream recommended for use in our scone mix--but we make sure to clearly outline everything on the product page for you.
What about allergies?
Our kits may be prepared with soy, and the ingredients in some of our mixes may be processed in facilities that store nuts. If you have any specific allergy concerns, please feel free to contact us.
Are there items which require refrigeration in PastryBase Boxes?
Nope! Our mixes and decorations don't require refrigeration, and have a shelf life of at least 6 months...so you can bake whenever you're ready!
When will my shipment arrive?
If you are a monthly subscriber, or if you specifically order the upcoming Baking Box on pre-order, your Baking Box will ship out on the 10th-13th of the month, via USPS 2-Day Priority Mail. All other orders, including individual Baking Boxes from previous months (ie not the most current box on pre-order) will be processed in 3-5 business days and then shipped via USPS 2-Day Priority Mail. If you need faster/overnight shipping, contact us for a quote.
When will my account be billed each month as a subscriber?
Your card will be charged for your first month on the day you subscribe, and then on the 20th of the month after that. You can also choose to pre-pay for your subscription, and will receive an extra discount for doing so.
Are there cut-off dates for subscribing?
You will receive the most current Baking Box first by subscribing by the 9th day of the month. If you subscribe after the 9th, your first box will arrive the following month. You can always purchase individual Baking Boxes from previous months.
As always, feel free to contact us anytime with any additional questions!
